One reservation most people have before purchasing a lab diamond is whether it’s just another version of a cubic zirconia. The fact is that lab diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same chemical and physical properties of minded diamonds.
What’s the Difference?
If lab diamonds sound too good to be true, let’s discuss how diamonds are made.
Minded diamonds are created deep within the earth when carbon dioxide is exposed to extreme heat and pressure. They are forced to the surface during volcanic explosions.
Lab diamonds are created in a similar manner. Carbon gases are placed in chambers where they undergo extreme heat and pressure. Once the gases cool, they crystalize, and a diamond is formed with the same exact properties as the diamonds that come from the earth.
Since lab diamonds can be created in one location, the mining process is eliminated, thus making them less expensive; unlike minded diamonds that must go through a long supply chain before they’re available for purchase.
For some buyers, knowing where their diamonds come from and if they were retrieved ethically is very important. Minded diamonds had a bit of a negative stigma years ago because of the conflict in Sierra Leone and even though the situation has been drastically reduced, some buyer may find it more ethical to purchase lab created diamonds.
Can They Be Certified?
Lab diamonds and minded diamonds are certified and graded using the same process. They are all sent to gem certification labs where they are graded by the four C’s (cut, clarity, carat and color).
Jewelers can attest that mind diamonds and lab diamonds can be almost impossible to differentiate, even when using a jeweler’s loupe.
